Softball Takes First Two From Sul Ross

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University softball team took the first two games of a four-game series with Sul Ross State University Friday afternoon 8-1 and 5-2.

After leading 2-0, the Lady Jackets used a 5-run fourth inning to put away from Sul Ross State. The inning helped secure the 8-1 win in game one of the double header.

Haleigh Caraway got the complete game win for HPU, allowing only one run on five hits and striking out three. Ashley Silva and Tylene Middleton each had two RBI in the game.

Game two was closer as the Lady Jackets strung together runs in the 2nd through 5th innings to lead 5-0 going into the sixth. Sul Ross State scored two in the seventh but the Lady Jackets held on for the 5-2 win.

Kayla Castillo got the complete game win allowing just two hits and striking out six. Tylene Middleton, Haleigh Caraway, and Jessica Morales each had two hits in the game.

The Lady Jackets improve to 6-16 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while Sul Ross State stands at 0-20 overall and 0-10 in ASC action.

The two teams will play a double header tomorrow to finish out the series.
