Tornados sweep away Lady Jackets

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Concordia Texas University Tornadoes brought wind and home runs to Howard Payne, sweeping the Lady Jackets Friday in a two-game set-up 5-6 in game one and 8-0 in game two.

With gusts of wind hitting 35-45 miles per hour at Lady Jacket Field came two home runs – one in each game – from CTX, and plenty of errors to start the double header.

In the first game, the Lady Jackets had four errors through just three innings of play. In the first inning, just one hit from the Tornados (21-13, 13-5 ASC) combined with two Lady Jacket (12-22, 10-10 ASC) errors gave CTX the early 2-0 lead. It would happen again in the third inning when CTX would knock through one hit, and match it with one more Jacket error to give them the 3-0 lead.

Howard Payne would comeback in the game, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up. With two outs and runners on second and third, Kimble Luna would pop up into left field, but outfielder Lauren Vansickle would have the wind get the best of her and miss the ball, allowing it to go right by her glove. The two-out error would score Katy Poerner and Tylene Middleton, to make the game 3-2.

The Lady Jackets would take advantage of the gift, as their next batter Ashely Silva would knock a double to left center and scoring Luna from second to tie it all up 3-3.

The Tornadoes would grab a bunt single in the top of the sixth, but that was it as the Lady Jackets bats were up quickly after that. To start the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Jackets would stay hot as Haleigh Caraway led the inning off with a double to left center, which was quickly followed by a Middleton single that poked through the right side of the field scoring Caraway from second to take their first lead 4-3.

Just three outs from their victory in the top of the seventh, the Lady Jackets weren't able to hold. Late game heroics from CTX's Jessica Rattan was the difference for the Tornadoes, as Rattan jacked a three-run home run to right center grabbing back the lead for CTX 6-4.

HPU would nab one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but were not able to bring in the game as they would strand two runners on base at the end of the game.

In game two, the Lady Jackets couldn't never got it rolling, and gave up a no-hitter to CTX starting pitcher Teylor Schiefelbein to lose 8-0 in sixth innings.

Schiefelbein would throw just six innings after the game was called due to the run rule – eight runs after five innings. Her no-hit outing would include four strikeouts, two walks, and no earned runs.

Neither team had much in the game until the third inning when the Tornados would begin to make their move to take the 2-0 lead. It would come when Jordan Berry would get a ball into the wind and knock a two-run home run to right center scoring Schiefelbein after her single.

From there, CTX would tack on one each in the forth and fifth innings to take their lead out to 4-0. They would double that lead in the top of the sixth batting in four runs on five hits, including two doubles.

The Lady Jackets were unable to respond in the bottom of the sixth to end the game 8-0 in favor of the Tornadoes.

The same two teams will play a double header at noon tomorrow, April 16 at Lady Jacket Field.
