Lady Jackets Sweep Day Two With CTX

Kayla Castillo struckout 7 and recorded 2 hits on Saturday versus CTX

BROWNWOOD – After being swept on Friday, the Howard Payne University softball team came out Saturday and returned the favor winning game one 4-1 and game two 4-3.

In the first game, the Lady Jackets (14-22, 12-10 ASC) got clutch hits when they needed them scoring four runs with just four hits. Brittany Johnson and Haleigh Caraway carried HPU with two hits each going a combined 4-4 at the plate.

Johnson got the scoring started for HPU hitting a single into right field scoring Kimble Luna from second. Concordia(22-14, 13-7 ASC) would answer back in the second inning with their lone run after Vicky Recek singled and brought in Alexis Lynn to tie the game up one all.

Caraway would start the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle. She would then move to second on a pass ball, to third on an infield out and then later score on wild pitch, breaking the tie and taking the game to 2-1.

The Lady Jackets would tack on two more insurance runs with two sac flies from Katie Poerner and Caraway in the fourth and sixth innings to bring the game to its final score of 4-1.

The Lady Jackets pitching combination of Baillie Trumble and Kayla Castillo kept the Tornados under wraps through the game. Through three innings, Trumble struck out one and walked three with just one earned run. Castillo would come in to relieve in the fourth, allowing just two hits through four innings with no earned runs striking out two.

In game two, Concordia gained a 3-0 lead after scoring two in the first and one in the second inning.

The Lady Jackets got back in the game in the fourth when Carissa Zarate doubled to left center with the bases loaded scoring three. To start it off Tylene Middleton drew a walk and then Heighleigh Caraway reached on an error by the CTX pitcher. Kelby Mann would walk to load the bases for Zarate's 3 RBI double.

The game remained tied till the bottom of the sixth when again the Lady Jackets got runners in scoring position. With runners at first and second, Liz Alvarado reached on a fielder's choice and Kayla Castillo was out at second by the second baseman. The second baseman's throw to first was high allowing Zarate to score the go ahead run.

Howard Payne held off Concordia in the top of the seventh to secure the 4-3 win.

Kayla Castillo picked up the win throwing 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out five. Castillo also picked up two key hits. Caraway and Zarate also had two hits each.

Howard Payne improves to 14-22 overall and 12-10 in ASC play, while Concordia stands at 22-14 overall and 13-7 in conference.

The Lady Jackets will finish out the regular season on Tuesday at home versus Schreiner University in a double header starting at 1:00 pm.
