Lady Jackets Split With Schreiner

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne softball team split a double header with Schreiner University 4-3 and 5-6 to end the regular season. The Lady Jackets wait for results from other ASC games this weekend to see if they will get a spot in the ASC post-season tournament.

The double header also featured a StrikeOut Cancer event and senior day for two HPU Lady Jackets, Justine Farrell-Raborn and Ashley Silva.

Howard Payne secured an early 3-0 lead in game one with runs in the bottom of the first. Liz Alvarado would reach on an error and then Kimble Luna pushed her to second on a bunt single. After an Ashley Silva flyout, Tylene Middleton singled to left field and an error by the left fielder would score Avarado from third. A Haleigh Caraway ground out, then a single by Katie Poerner scored Middleton and Luna to bring the score to 3-0 HPU.

Schreiner scored a single run in the fourth only to be answered by the Lady Jackets in the bottom of the inning on a Kelby Mann single.

Schreiner scored two in the next inning but Howard Payne shut the door from there and secured the 4-3 win.

Kayla Castillo got the complete game win for HPU giving up three runs on nine hits. Rebecca Hay was tabbed with the lost for Schreiner.

In game two, Schreiner jump out to a 5-0 lead after three innings scoring two in the second and three in the third inning.

Lady Jackets got back in the game in the sixth scoring four runs to bring it to within one, 4-5 Schreiner. In the next innings Tylene Middleton took the first pitch in her at bat to deep left field for a solo homerun to tie the game at 5-5 and send it to extra innings.

Howard Payne unable to get any runs on the board in the extra innings. Schreiner scored the winning run in the ninth to win 5-6.

Castillo picked up the loss for HPU and Allyson Morris was awarded the complete game win for Schreiner.

The Lady Jackets are waiting for the outcome of the Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia Texas series this weekend to see if they will get an ASC post-season tournament spot.
