Lady Jackets and TLU Bulldogs share wins

Brittany Johnson, No. 10

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University softball team shared wins Saturday afternoon with the Texas Lutheran University Lady Bulldogs, losing the first of two games 1-5, and winning the second game 5-2.

Senior first basemen Ashley Silva was 4 for 5 at the plate in the two games, finishing with two RBI's, one run scored and a double.

In the first game, the Jackets got on the board first in the forth inning when pinch runner Carissa Zarate scored from second base catching TLU trying to double up Brittany Johnson at first base.

From there the Lady Bulldogs scored five unanswered runs, with one in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Their four runs in the sixth inning came on a two-out rally that included five consecutive hits after their first two batters of the inning had gotten out.

Baillie Trumble started for the Lady Jackets and had a solid game up until the sixth inning. She would finish with three strikeouts and one walk, allowing four earned runs on just seven hits.

In the second part of the double header, the Lady Jackets jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it. In the first, Silva would hit a double to left center off the wall scoring Alvarado from first for the first run. After that, Middleton would walk and Caraway would single to load the bases with just one out for Brittany Johnson

Johnson would foul off ten pitches before lining out to third, but in TLU's attempt to double up the runner off the base at first, the first basemen missed the ball allowing it to roll into the Jacket dugout. That would give HPU two free bases and two runs, scoring Middleton from second and Silva from first. That event gave HPU a 3-0 lead after one inning.

In the second inning, the Jackets would tack two more runs on. The first run would come when Morales doubled to the left center gap scoring Bianca Ybarra from first base. After another walk and sac bunt, Silva would get her second RBI of the game when she hit a single into left field scoring Morales from third.

Howard Payne pitcher Caraway took over from there pitching six scoreless innings until the seventh when the Lady Bulldogs would grab two. For the game Caraway allowed just four hits and two earned runs, with just one walk.

The Lady Jackets' record is now 10-18 overall and 8-6 in the American Southwest Conference, while the Lady Bulldogs drop to 10-18 as well, but just 3-9 in the conference play.

The next series for the Lady Jackets will start at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 8 against Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.
