Softball Splits With Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas – The Howard Payne University softball team split a double header with Hardin-Simmons University 2-3 and 7-3 Friday afternoon at Ellis Field.

It took an extra inning to decide the first game of the day with both teams tied at 2-2 after seven innings.

After Hardin-Simmons scored two runs in the third, Howard Payne's Brittany Johnson hit a two-run homerun to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning. In the extra frame, HSU used two doubles to score and gain the 2-3 win.

Baillie Trumble and Kayla Castillo each saw three innings of work with Janna Allen throwing the last 1.1 innings recording the loss.

In game two, both teams were tied 2-2 after the first inning. A Haleigh Caraway double to center field scored Ashley Silva and Johnson for the Lady Jackets first two runs.

It was Silva who opened the game up for the Lady Jackets with a three-run homerun to center field to give HPU a 5-2 lead after four innings.

HPU added single scores in the next two innings on a Kimble Luna RBI double and a Caraway RBI single. HPU gave up one additional run in the bottom of the seventh but held on to secure the 7-3 victory.

Haleigh Caraway got the win for HPU throwing 4.0 innings. Trumble and Castillo also saw action in relief.

Howard Payne is now 11-19 overall and 9-7 in conference play and Hardin-Simmons is 18-12 overall and 13-2 in ASC action.

Both teams will finish out the series with a double header on Saturday.
