Jackets Rally Late To Down ETBU

Box Score
MARSHALL, Texas - After leading by as many as 17 in the second half, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets have to rally from a 68-62 deficit post a 75-68 non-conference win over East Texas Baptist University in men's basketball action Tuesday evening.

The Jackets were led by Brandon Gould with a game high 26 points on 6 of 13 shooting. He was 13 of 14 from the free-throw line with six rebounds and four assists.

Leading the majority of the game, the Jackets used 54% shooting to hold a 42-28 halftime lead. HPU finished the game shooting 45.6% while holding ETBU to just 38% for the game.

"I was proud of the way our guys stayed the course of the game and fought," said HPU head coach Troy Drummond. "They had a chance to fold and quit playing after ETBU took the lead, but they kept playing until the final buzzer went off.  It was a total team win, every person contributed including our guys on the bench."

The Jackets led 51-34 with 13:43 remaining on a Christian Davis layup. ETBU would put together a run from there to take the lead and push it to six, 68-62 with 1:28 remaining.

It was all Jackets from that point as HPU outscored ETBU 13-0 in the final 1:28 to win 75-68. Brandon Gould scored 8 of the 13 in the final minute and a half.

JaKalan Gayden had a double double with 11 points and a game high 10 rebounds. Christian Davis had his best game as a Jacket so far with 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting, 2 of 3 from behind the arc. Michael Thompson finished with seven points and nine rebounds.

ETBU was led by Kerry McClahan with 12 points. Jaron Joseph and Junior Mitchell each added 11 points.

Howard Payne now stands at 1-1 overall and East Texas Baptist falls 2-1 overall. The Jackets will have their home opener on Saturday, November 24th at 3:00 pm in the Brownwood Coliseum.
