Jackets Lose To Trinity

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Howard Payne men's basketball team fell 58-54 to Trinity University on day one of the Southwestern University tournament. 

The Yellow Jackets held a seven point lead with 15 minutes to play in the game but Trinity would rally in the final minutes to win 58-54. Howard Payne did outrebound Trinity 35-25 and led in second chance points 13-2.

Trinity put together a 10-0 run midway through the second half to gain the lead. The Jackets would later take a 52-50 lead on a JaKalan Gayden layup with 2:38 remaining. A Yellow Jacket charging call and missed free-throws would lead to Trinity securing the lead and the game in the closing minutes.

Brandon Gould led HPU with 14 points and four assists. Christian Davis and Michael Thompson each finished with nine. Thompson added 10 rebounds.

Zach Lambert had 17 points for Trinity and Joe Shotland followed with 10.

The Jackets are now 2-6 overall and Trinity is 5-3 overall. Howard Payne will play tournament host Southwestern on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
