Softball Picks Up Win On Day 2 Of Tournament

IRVING, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball teams goes 1-3 at the University of Dallas tournament getting a win over Rust College on day two.

Howard Payne stands at 3-5 overall and will play next March 2nd - 3rd at the American Southwest Conference 1st Pitch Tournament in Framers Branch, Texas. HPU will play Centenary and UT-Dallas on Friday and Mississippi College and LeTourneau on Saturday.

On day one of the UDallas tournament, the Lady Jackets dropped their opening game versus host UDallas 2-1. Kayla Castillo recorded the loss for HPU throwing the complete game and striking out seven. Game two for HPU ended in a 9-5 loss to the University of the Ozarks. Haleigh Caraway got the loss for Howard Payne pitching four full innings.
 
The Lady Jackets bounced back on day two with a 12-0 run-rule victory over Rust College. Haleigh Caraway got the win striking out eight and walking none. Brittany Johnson was 3 of 4 and Jessica Morales finished 2 of 2 with 3 RBIs.

The final game of the tournament turned out to be a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Ozarks. After the Lady Jackets would go ahead 5-4 in the top of the eighth inning, Ozarks scored the winning two runs on a RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Castillo got the loss for HPU only throwing one inning in relief. Starter Baillie Trumble threw six innings, gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out three.
