Jackets Lose Heartbreaker To CTX

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne University got a game high 34 points from Brandon Irwin but it was not enough as the Yellow Jackets fall 96-92 to Concordia University Texas Saturday afternoon.

Concordia shot 52% from the floor in the game, 63% in the second half. Howard Payne did force 22 Concordia turnovers but could not keep up with CTX's hot shooting.

Howard Payne falls to 8-13 overall and 6-11 in conference. Concordia stands at 13-8 overall and 11-6 in conference play.

The Jackets started slow and found themselves down by as much as 14 points in the first half. HPU stepped up the defensive pressure and battled back to a three-point halftime deficit, 45-42 CTX.

The Yellow Jackets continued to push and gained a five point lead in the second half. A Bryan Adams jumper with 10:59 to play would give HPU a 70-65 advantage. Concordia from that point put together a 10-2 run to regain the lead.

After CTX push their lead to as much as 11 with four minutes to play, the Jackets would make a late run. A Brandon Irwin free-throw with five seconds remaining would cut the score to 95-92 CTX. After a HPU foul, Concordia hit one of two free-throws. HPU's last second shot did not fall and Concordia held on for the 96-92 win.

Brandon Irwin led all scorers with 34 points and a team high nine rebounds. Brandon Gould followed with 19 points and four assists. Michael Thompson added 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Josh Johnson had 28 points and a game high 14 rebounds for Concordia. Darius Anderson added 17 points.

Howard Payne will play again on Thursday at home versus Texas Lutheran and on Saturday versus Schreiner.
