Softball Drops DH To UMHB

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball team fell 8-3 and 7-3 in a conference double header to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday afternoon.

Tp start the double header, the Lady Jackets found themselves down early to Mary Hardin-Baylor after giving up two runs in the first and one in the second inning. UMHB added four more in the fourth and one in the fifth to round at their scoring. The Lady Jackets would score two in the fifth on double to right field by Katie Poerner bringing home Evangelina Tellez and Liz Alvarado. A Brittany Johnson sacrifice fly in the sixth brought home Haleigh Caraway. UMHB would hold on for the 8-3 final.

Baillie Trumble got the loss for HPU throwing five innings and giving up eight runs on five hits. Shandi Winstead lead HPU at the plate going 2 of 3.

In game two, UMHB again jumped out the an early 3-0 lead but this time the Lady Jackets would tied it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the third. HPU capitized on three UMHB errors in the inning. The Lady Jacket offense went cold from there and UMHB moved ahead scoring two in the fifth and seventh innings. Kayla Castillo got the loss for HPU throwing five innings giving up five runs on eight hits.

Howard Payne is now 6-12 overall and 1-5 in conference. UMHB stands at 10-7 overall and 6-0 in conference. The two teams will finish out the conference series with a double header on Saturday starting at noon.
