Softball Splits With UMHB

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball team used a 6-run third inning to win the first of two games with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon in conference action. Mary Hardin-Baylor won game two 4-2.

Howard Payne moves to 7-13 overall and 2-6 in the American Southwest Conference West. UMHB is now 11-8 overall and 7-1 in ASC West Division play following the split.

UMHB scored three runs in the top of the second in game two and then held off a late rally by the Lady Jackets for a 4-2 win. Howard Payne cut it to 3-2 on a run-scoring fielder's choice and a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth. UMHB added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. The Lady Jackets would have the winning run at the plate with two out in the final frame but would be unable to bring them home falling 4-2.

The Lady Jackets used a 6-run third inning in game one to cruise to a 7-3 win. A RBI double made it 1-0 UMHB in the top of the first, but UMHB committed three errors and gave up four hits in HPU's six-run third inning. UMHB would single home two runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 6-3, but the Lady Jackets added an insurance run in the bottom of that frame.

Howard Payne will play a conference series next weekend in Austin versus Concordia University Texas. Friday's double header will begin at 3:00 pm and Saturday will start at 1:00 pm.
