Softball Takes Two From Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball team recorded 20 hits in a American Southwest Conference West Division double header versus Sul Ross State Friday afternoon. The Lady Jackets won both games 17-9 and 5-4.

In game one, Sul Ross State committed six fielding errors and Howard Payne recorded 15 hits to lead to a 17-9 Lady Jackets win. Haleigh Caraway got the win for HPU throwing 3.0 innings in relief. The game was tied 5-5 at the end of the third when HPU starting pitcher Kayla Castillo left the game. HPU used a nine-run fourth to pull away from the Lady Lobos.

Game two was much closer with Sul Ross State pulling to within one 5-4 at the end of the sixth. HPU would get a three up three down bottom of the seventh to secure the 5-4 win. Baillie Trumble got the complete game win for HPU giving up four runs on eight hits.

Howard Payne is now 16-16 overall and 10-8 in ASC West action. Sul Ross State stands at 4-30 overall and 1-17 in conference play. The teams will finish the conference series with a double header tomorrow starting at 11:00 am.
