First win for Lady Jackets over HSU in over 15 years

ABILENE, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's tennis team wins their first match over Hardin-Simmons University in over 15 years. The 5-4 win for Howard Payne was decided on a tie breaker in the last match of the day.

In the last match of the day, Samantha Guerrero defeated Tram Le of HSU 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-4) to clinch the 5-4 victory for the Lady Jackets. It was the bottom of the ladder for HPU that got it done in the end with the Lady Jackets also taking the number four and five singles points. At number four, Jenna Johnson defeated Kelsi Jackson 6-2, 6-3 and in the fifth spot Emilee Stephens defeated Amelia Chaney 6-4, 6-0.

Howard Payne started the match by taking the number one and two doubles points to gain an early advantage. Gabi Crunelle and Joan Burks defeated Lauren Jay and Genene Haddad 8-5 and Jenna Johnson and Whitney Turnacliff defeated Amelia Chaney and Kelsi Jackson 8-4.

The Lady Jackets improve to 7-13 overall and 4-1 ASC West Division action. Hardin-Simmons falls to 7-9 overall and 3-2 ASC action. The win gives Howard Payne a spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament.
