Lady Jackets Take TLU Series

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University softball team split a double header with Texas Lutheran University 4-1 and 7-12 and taking the four-game conference series 3-1.

The Lady Jackets stand 14-16 overall and 8-8 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. Texas Lutheran is now 14-18 overall and 9-11 in ASC West action.

Howard Payne used a three-run opening frame to take control of game one early. Kimble Luna reached on a fielder's choice bringing home Katie Poerner on a safe call at home plate. Haleigh Caraway then homered to right field scoring Luna and herself. Each team would add one run in the third inning.

Katie Poerner was 3 of 3 from the plate with a triple. Kayla Castillo got the complete game win giving up one run on seven hit and striking out two.

Texas Lutheran hit the ball much better in game two recording 12 runs on 17 hits. TLU was helped by four Lady Jacket errors. HPU got two runs in the first and fourth innings and then added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Jessica Morales and Brittany Johnson each were 3 of 4 at the plate. Tylene Middleton and Caraway each had two hits. Baillie Trumble got the loss for HPU throwing 2.1 innings giving up three runs on five hits. Caraway and Castillo also saw time in relief.

The Lady Jackets will play next in Alpine next weekend against Sul Ross State University. Friday's double header will begin at 1:00 pm.
