Jackets Fall In Final Minutes To Sul Ross

Christian Davis grabbed a team high nine boards versus Sul Ross

Box Score BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne men's basketball team fell in the final seconds for the second time this season to Sul Ross State, 76-73, Tuesday evening at the Brownwood Coliseum.

It was a defensive battle in the first half with the Jackets holding a 29-27 advantage at the break. Neither team shot over 40% from the field in the first half.

The Jackets would build a nine point lead midway through the second half. A layup by Nigele Robertson with 8:49 to play would give Howard Payne a 58-49 lead. Robertson scored five points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Jackets off the bench.

Sul Ross State went on a 12-0 run from then to take the lead 61-58 with 4:39 to play in the game.

The Jackets would retake the lead and go up by two on a Brandon Gould layup with 2:38 to remaining, 67-65 HPU.

After the Lobos again gained the lead, the Jackets would pull to within one on a Gould layup with :11 seconds remaining. Sul Ross then hit two free-throw to lead 76-73 with :09 seconds left. The Yellow Jacket three-point attempt to tie was off the mark and the Lobos secured the win.

Brandon Gould would lead the Yellow Jackets with a game high 28 points along with four steals. Gould was 11 of 18 from the field. Christian Davis followed with 13 points and nine rebounds. Donovan Ford added 12 points.

Sul Ross was led by Darrell Gardner with 17 points. Mychal Pinson had 16 points. Percy Settle and Luke Taylor each added 10 points. Settle also grabbed a game high 10 rebounds.

The Jacket are now 0-4 overall and 0-3 to start conference play. Sul Ross State stands at 2-2 overall and 2-0 in conference. Howard Payne will play next on December 5th at Concordia University Texas in Austin, Texas. Tip-off is at 7:30 pm.
