Jackets Fall To Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas - Second half shooting woes for Howard Payne leads to a 86-77 conference loss to Sul Ross Sate Tuesday evening in conference actin.

The Jackets shot just 53% from the free-throw line for the game and 37% from the field in the second half to fall 86-77.

In the first half, both teams began trading baskets as Sul Ross led 9-8 with 15:05 on the clock. After the Lobos led 18-8 at the 12:15 mark, Howard Payne would go on a 15-8 run to trail 23-26 with 8:05 to play.

Sul Ross answered with a 15-3 run to improve their lead 41-26 with 4:03 remaining. The Yellow Jackets would not give up though and went on a 12-3 run to trail 38-44 at the half.

In the second half, Howard Payne continued where the left off and started out on a 15-6 run to cut the margin to 50-53. The Yellow Jackets kept attacking but could not take the lead from Sul Ross, as the Lobos led 62-61 with 7:25 to play.

The Lobos then began to put the game away, going on a 10-0 run to stretch their lead to 72-61 with 4:45 left in the game. Howard Payne would outscore Sul Ross 16-14 from that point on, but the Lobos prevailed and ended the game with an 86-77 victory.

Brandon Gould led HPU with 23 points and four assists. Christian Davis followed with 17 points and seven assists. Quell an Lancaster grabbed a game high 10 rebounds.

Sul Ross State was led by Mychal Pinson with a game high 26 points. He was followed by Juston Weldon with 19 points.

Howard Payne is now 6-16 overall and 4-12 in the ASC. Sul Ross stands at 5-17 overall and 4-12 in conference. The Jackets will play their regular season home finale on Saturday at 3:00 pm versus Hardin-Simmons. HPU seniors will be recognized before the game.
