HPU Loses To HSU

Box Score BROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne was outrebounded 57-30 in an 83-73 conference loss to Hardin-Simmons Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum.

Hardin-Simmons jumped out to a lead in the first half and led 30-18 with 9:13 to play in the half. HSU maintained the lead until halftime leading 38-27 at the break. HSU held a 32-16 advantage in rebounding but the Jackets would force 14 first half turnovers.

In the second half, Howard Payne would pull to within seven points twice, the last time on two free-throws from Quelan Lancaster with 3:29 left.

HSU dominated the game on the backboards, outrebounding the Yellow Jackets 57-30 in the game.

Brandon Gould and Donovan Ford each scored 20 points for Howard Payne. Gould added four assists and five steals. Jorden Young had 11 points and five steals. Lancaster finished 12 points.

Derrick Jefferson and Titus each had 15 points for the Cowboys. Jefferson also added 12 rebounds and six assists. Charles Sams and Cameron Barnes had 11 points each and Mawen Maywin had 10 points.

Howard Payne falls to 4-14 overall and 4-11 in conference play. HSU is now 11-7 on the year and 11-4 in conference play. The Jackets will play at the University of Texas at Dallas on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
