SAN MARCOS, Texas – Howard Payne fell 68-39 to NCAA D-I Texas State University in nonconference action Sunday evening at Strahan Coliseum
Howard Payne came out strong and led early 9-5 on a
Brandon Gould 3-pointer with 16:05 on the clock.
Texas State put together a 17-0 run midway through the period to gain a 26-14 advantage with 7:44 to go in the first half. Using 56% shooting from the field, the Bobcats would lead 32-18 at the break.
The Yellow Jackets were able to keep it around a 15-20 point game through the midway point of the second half. Then Texas State stepped up the defensive pressure late in the half their lead to 32 with 3:29 to play in the game.
The Yellow Jackets shot 26% from the field for the game while Texas State shot 48%. The rebounding battle was even at 38-38 with the Jackets grabbing 16 offensive boards.
Ty Davis and
Brandon Gould led Howard Payne with seven points each, Davis added a team high seven rebounds.
Texas State was led by Cameron Naylor with 18 points and 16 rebounds.
Howard Payne is now 0-3 on the year and Texas State stands at 3-1 overall. The Yellow Jackets will play next on Dec. 4th at 7:30 pm versus Mary Hardin-Baylor in the Brownwood Coliseum.
