SEGUIN, Texas — The Howard Payne women's soccer team evened their overall record at 3-3 with their third straight shutout victory, 2-0 over former American Southwest Conference rival Texas Lutheran Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Jackets tallied both their goals less than six minutes apart in the final 16 minutes of the contest.
Marlene Gillespie ended the stalemate with 15:45 remaining as she chipped a shot over TLU goal keeper, thanks to an assist from
Samantha Mullins.
With 10:08 remaining,
Taylor Bicknell added an insurance goal in the box, scoring off a cross from
Marley Zochert.
Howard Payne fired 17 shots with nine on goal — four from Bicknell and one each from Gillespie, Zochert,
Tyla Tipton,
Brittany Davis and
Vivian Nguyen.
Kelsie Piland played all 90 minutes in goal for Howard Payne and tallied one save as Texas Lutheran (3-4-1) attempted only four shots total.
The Lady Jackets, who began their win streak with back-to-back 3-0 victories over Centenary and McMurry, will target their fourth straight victory when American Southwest Conference action resumes at 2 p.m. Saturday against Hardin-Simmons. Last season the HPU women tied the nationally ranked Cowgirls. The HPU women will host Ranger College at 2 p.m. Tuesday in an exhibition match.
