Box Score ALPINE, Texas – Howard Payne University was on the road to face off against the Lobos of Sul Ross State University on Tuesday night in Alpine. After failing to get into a rhythm, the Lady Jackets fell in four sets, 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 16-25, 21-25.)
After falling to Sul Ross State 26-24 in the first set, Howard Payne came out strong and took the second set 25-17. However, it was the only set the ladies were able to take as the Lobos swept the next two sets to get the 3-1 victory.
The Lady Jackets came out quick and grabbed a 5-2 lead in the first set, only to see the Lobos battle back and take the lead. Sul Ross held on to the lead the entire set before Howard Payne was able to notch the score back up at 24 apiece. The Lobos took the set 26-24 after a couple of mental lapses from the Jackets.
Determined not to let the match slip away, Howard Payne came out and dominated the second set to finish with the 25-17 result. They were up by as many as nine points quick and used some strong team play to run away with the set.
The Lobos surged ahead to take the next two sets and capture the victory. The Lady Jackets pushed hard to take the game into a fifth set during the fourth but came up short after starting the set slow. They trailed by as many five points at various points throughout the set, but battled back near the end only to fall 25-21.
Shelbie Harry and Zhartezia Bradley each contributed 11 kills to lead Howard Payne. Cheyanne Lovelady had 30 assists while Analisa Anzaldua had 13 digs in the loss. The Yellow Jackets fall to 6-10 on the season and 3-5 in ASC play.
Next up for the Jackets is the ASC Crossover event on the campus of UT-Dallas on October 14th-15th. They'll face UT-Tyler at noon and then take the court a second time on the day against ETBU at 7:30 pm. Live stats can be found at http://www.sidearmstats.com/utd/wvball2/
