SEGUIN, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team outscored Texas Lutheran University 34-13 in the fourth quarter but fell 74-71 in non-conference action Thursday evening on the road.
With shooting woes in the first three quarters, the Lady Jackets battled back from a 61-37 deficit to start the 4th quarter to have an opportunity to tie the game with :13 seconds remaining. Three point attempts by
Sabrina Ochoa and
Presley McKethan would not drop and the Lady Jackets fell 74-71. Howard Payne would score 25 of its 34 4th quarter points on forced TLU turnovers.
Howard Payne forced 29 Texas Lutheran turnovers in the game but is was 33% shooting from the floor for HPU that was the difference in the game. TLU would also outrebound HPU 47-36 ion the night.
HPU's
Presley McKethan led all scorers with a career high 23 points on 7 of 18 shooting hitting all seven from behind the arc. McKethan's seven was the second most by a Lady Jacket in a game ever, tying
Danyel Bradley's performance in 2014.
McKethan was followed by
Valarie Matlock and Micah Cisneros each with 12 points. Matlock also had a game high six steals along wth a team high eight rebounds and three assists.Â
Texas Lutheran was led by Kristen Lye with 22 points and a game high 12 rebounds.Â
Howard Payne starts the season at 0-2 overall and Texas Lutheran now stands at 1-1 overall. The Lady Jackets will travel to Kerrville, Texas to play Schreiner University on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
