SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's basketball team lost 87-37 to D-I Texas State University Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
Despite holding Texas State to 3 of 20 shooting from behind the arc, Howard Payne was outrebounded 44-31 and outscored 54-14 in the paint. The Yellow Jackets struggled from the field shooting just 28% (14 of 50) on the night.
Down 43-22 at the half, the Jackets cut the Bobcat lead to fifteen, 45-30, to start the second half sparked by three-point buckets by
Rickey Guillory. It would be all Texas State from that point as the Bobcats extended their lead going on to post the 87-37 final.
Rickey Guillory led HPU with six points and two steals followed
Khyce Randall and DeMarcus Hurd with five points each. Four Jackets finished with four rebounds. HPU was 4 of 18 (22%) from behind the arc and shot just 45% (5 of 11) from the free-throw line.Â
Texas State was led by Maljhum McCrea with a game high 17 points followed by Nijal Pearson with 14 points and nine rebounds. The Bobcats were 33 of 67 (40%) from the field and 18 of 21 (86%) from the line.
Howard Payne is now 5-5 on the year and Texas State stands at 6-5 overall. The Jackets will play next on Dec. 31 st at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, it will be a 3:00 pm start.
