BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University softball team won its 2016 home opener 8-0 (5) and 5-4 in extra innings over Schreiner University Friday afternoon at Lady Jacket Field.

The Lady Jackets would get all the offense they needed in the first two innings of game one. HPU scored three in the first frame and five in the second cruising to an 8-0 run-rule victory in five innings.

Celese Tirres (1-1) got the complete game win in the circle for HPU allowing just two hits, striking out three and walking none.

Celina Ortiz was 3-for-3 from the plate for HPU. Ortiz had one RBI and scored twice. Yasmine Ayala finished 2-for-3 from the plate with a RBI. Adrienne Sanchez had two RBIs on one hit.

The Lady Jackets would need extra innings in game two to claim the win on a walk-off RBI single by Sabrina Ochoa in the ninth. Allison Eaton led off the ninth with a triple to right center and it was Ochoa's single to right center that plated Eaton for the 5-4 victory.

Ortiz was 2-for-3 at the plate in game two and was 5-for-6 from the plate for the day. Kodi Glosson and Ochoa each had two hits and a RBI. Tayler Rushing (1-0) got the win allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out three in six inning of work. Celese Tirres allowed two hits in three innings in relief.

Howard Payne is now 2-1 overall and Schreiner stands at 0-2 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play at home on Tuesday versus Huston-Tillotson University. It will be a double header starting at 1:00 pm.
