BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball team took two from Concordia University Texas 2-0 and 4-1 to complete the conference series sweep of the Tornados Friday afternoon at Lady Jacket Field.
The Lady Jackets held the Tornados to just three hits total on the day while HPU recorded seven hits in each game. Howard Payne used timely hitting in the late innings to secure both games.
In game one, both teams were tied up at 0-0 going to the bottom of the sixth when
Brittany Ponder doubled down the right field line to score
Gaby Muniz. Then an
Adrienne Sanchez single to right field brought home
Sabrina Ochoa to make the score 2-0 Howard Payne.
Celese Tirres allowed just one hit in the complete game victory. She had seven strikeouts and walked none. Seven different Lady Jackets recorded hits in the game.
Howard Payne would never trail in game two jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Sabrina Ochoa reached on an error by the shortstop allowing
Rachel Hitt to score. Then an
Adrienne Sanchez single to left field brought home
Gaby Muniz.
The Tornados scored a single run in the second but the Lady Jackets would respond the fifth. Ochoa doubled down the left line to plate

Gaby Muniz each went 2-for-3 from the plate for Howard Payne.
Celese Tirres (14-15) recorded her second complete game victory on the day allowing just one run on three hits, striking out five and walking one.
Howard Payne is now 16-19 overall and 12-15 in American Southwest Conference play. Concordia stands at 8-29 overall and 5-22 in league action. Howard Payne will play at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas next weekend to finish out the regular season.
