BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's soccer team forced overtime but would fall on a own goal score 7:33 into the overtime period.
After both teams played to a 0-0 score at the break, McMurry would score on a header in the 75th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets answered in the 87th minute with a score by Jonpaul Vargus on a Christian Rodriquez assist to eventually force overtime. It was Vargus' third goal of the season.
The overtime score by McMurry would be a heartbreaker being that the War Hawks had been playing a man down since their keeper had received a red card in the 67th minute.
McMurry held the shot count advantage 16-10 overall but only 9-7 in shots on goal. Each team would take three corner kicks in the match.
Nicholas Panameno recorded the loss in the start in goal with six saves.Â
Reid Longabaugh, Christian Rodriquez and Vargus each finished with two shots in the match, Longabaugh's were both on goal.
Howard Payne is now 5-6-0 overall and 3-5-0 in American Southwest Conference action. McMurry stands at 6-2-4 overall and 3-2-2 in league play. The Jackets will play host to Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday at 3:30 pm at Citizens National Bank Field.
