MEMPHIS, TN - The Howard Payne University men's basketball team posted its first victory of the season in a 97-73 win over Millsaps College Sunday afternoon at Rhodes College.
The Yellow Jackets used 53.1% shooting while holding the Majors to just 38.6% shooting to gain their first victory of the year. The Jackets also dominated the paint outscoring Millsaps 42-30 and out rebounding them 41-38.
Midway through the first half Howard Payne used a 9-0 run to gain a seven point advantage and then finished off the first half with a another 7-0 run to lead Millsaps 45-29 at the half.
Khyce Randall led HPU with a game high 25 points along with seven rebounds.
De'Marcus Hurd followed with 22 points on 3 of 6 shooting from behind the arc.
Darren Farmer added 14 points and
Talen Davis and Shadd Cole each finished with 10 points. Cole and
Thomas Bingham both ended with a game high eight rebounds.
Millsaps was led by Sam Kohnke with 18 points followed by Michael Sullivan with 11.
Howard Payne is now 1-3 overall and Millsaps stands at 1-4 on the year. The Jackets will play at the University of Texas at Dallas on Thursday at 7:30 pm in the conference opener for both teams.
