Jackets lose battle with Lobos

Box Score ALPINE, Texas – The Howard Payne University finished the season with a 63-59 loss to Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon.

Howard Payne's Khyce Randall carried much of the Yellow Jackets scoring posting a near career high 31 points on 9 of 15 shooting hitting four from behind the arc.

The Yellow Jackets would lead by as much as ten, 49-39, midway through the second half but Sul Ross State outscored the Jackets 13-3 to tie the game at 52-52 with 6:56 remaining in the game.

The Jackets were whistled for three offensive fouls in the closing minutes allowing the Lobos to stay within striking distance. Sul Ross' Xavier Webb hit a three pointer with :30 remaining to give them the Lobos a 61-59 lead.

HPU's Khyce Randall led all scorers with 31 points along with three steals. J Bailey followed with seven points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Rickey Guillory ended the game with eight points and five rebounds.

The Jackets would get two three point attempts in the closing seconds to tie or win the game but Sul Ross held for the 63-59 final.

Caleb Thomasson led Sul Ross with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jacob Dawson had 15 and Xavier Webb finished with 11.

The Yellow Jackets finish the season at 12-12 and 8-8 in American Southwest Conference action. Sul Ross State stands at 13-12 overall and 9-7 in league play.
