ABILENE, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's tennis team opened the 2017 spring team season with an 8-1 loss at Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon.

Howard Payne was able to pick up the number one doubles point to start the day. Gabe Benitez and Edgar Torres defeated Chandler Livingston and Jordan Davis of Hardin-Simmons 9-8. The Jackets would drop the other two doubles matches 8-2 and 8-2.

Benitez posted the strongest showing in singles play for Howard Payne falling in number three singles 6-3, 6-2 to Cameron Vose of Hardin-Simmons.

The HPU men's team will play next on Feb. 24th at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. It will be a 5:30 pm start time. HPU will have five other road matches before returning to the Nabers Tennis Center for the home opener versus Schreiner University on March 24th.
