ALPINE, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's basketball dropped a conference match-up with Sul Ross State University 84-65 Saturday afternoon.
Despite out-rebounding the Lobos 46-33 in the game, the Yellow Jackets struggled to stop the Lobo offense as Sul Ross connected on 51.7% of its shots in the game.
After cutting the Sul Ross lead to four with 1:28 remaining in the first half, Sul Ross finished the half with a run to hold a 37-26 advantage at the break. The Jackets would never be able to pull any closer than nine in the second half.
Khyce Randall led all scorers with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Randall was 13 of 17 from the free-throw line.
Javaris Jones scored 14 off the bench, going 5 of 8 from the field.
Sul Ross was led by Caleb Thomasson with 15 points and eight rebounds. Stephen Walker added 14 points while BJ Hollis and Brock Anders each had 10 points apiece.
Howard Payne now stands at 7-9 overall and 3-5 in American Southwest Conference play. with the win, Sul Ross is now 12-4 overall and 7-1 in league action. The Jackets will play at home next Thursday versus Hardin-Simmons at 7:30 pm.
