AUSTIN, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball team opened the 2018 season with 10-1 (5) and 6-2 losses at Huston-Tillotson University Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Jackets committed 10 errors in the double headed, four in game one and six in game two. Despite the lack of crispness in the field, Howard Payne matched Huston-Tillotson in hits 13-12 on the day.

In game one, the Lady Jackets would score their only run in the top of the first inning on a Kayla Boucher single to right field plating Shawneece Jones. 

Tanya Thompson recorded the loss for HPU allowing 10 runs (4 earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts. 

In game two, again the Lady Jackets would score first this time on a Shawneece Jones solo homerun to left field. Sparked by HPU errors, Huston-Tillotson answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.

The Lady Jackets gained their second run of the game in the top of the second when Bri Davis grounded out to shortstop to score Katelyn Dickerson.

Tia Campos received the loss for HPU in game two allowing six runs (2 earned) on six hits. Morgean Schultz and Katelyn Dickerson each recorded two hits for the Lady Jackets.

Howard Payne is now 0-2 overall and Huston-Tillotson stands at 2-0 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play next on Saturday, Feb. 3rd at home versus Schreiner University. The scheduled double header will begin at 1:00 pm at Lady Jacket Field.
