MARSHALL, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's soccer team dropped a heart-breaking overtime loss 2-1 at East Texas Baptist University this Saturday evening to close out the 2018 season.
East Texas Baptist scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute, 5:17 into the overtime period.Â
Howard Payne took a 1-0 advantage in the 39th minute when
Michael Westerman netted his fifth PK goal of the season, sixth overall on the year.
Playing solid defensively throughout most of the match, the Yellow Jackets would give up a goal in the 81st minute which would eventually send the match to overtime.
ETBUÂ led in total shots 13-10, (7-5 in shots on goal) but the Jackets would have an 11-7 advantage in corner kick in the game.
Abdias Rodriguez led HPU with three shots, two on goal.
Spencer Lyon and
Angel Rivas each added two shots. Keeper
Andrew Hackney finished the match with five saves.
The Jackets narrowly miss out on the American Southwest Conference tournament finishing the season at 5-9 overall and 4-7 in league play. ETBUÂ now is 9-5-2 overall and 6-3-2 in ASC action.
