Jones' Walk-Off Helps Softball Claim Series

Shawneece Jones scored three runs while going 3-3 from the plate with two doubles, and two RBI

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Lady Jackets of Howard Payne University wrapped up their three-game series vs. LeTourneau University on Saturday afternoon by collecting a 15-6 result in six innings of play.

Senior Kayla Boucher got a hold of a pitch and drove it deep over the left-center wall to collect her second home run of the season while Audrey Simpson and Tia Campos combined to hold off a series of LeTourneau rallies in the circle to help pick up the 15-6 victory.

The result helped Howard Payne collect their first ASC conference series victory 2-1 vs. LeTourneau and helps boost their record to 5-15-2 overall. Shawneece Jones scored three runs while going a perfect 3-3 from the plate with two doubles, two walks, and two RBI during her walk off performance.

It was Jones who helped set the tone early on when she doubled to score Morgean Schultz, who had led off the game by drawing a walk. After Boucher used her first plate appearance to blast a home run and clear the bases, the Lady Jackets had an early 3-0 lead.

LeTourneau scored two runs in the top of the third to get within in one run of the lead and it appeared the outcome of the game would be similar to series first, which ended ina 3-2 HPU win. However, after both teams exchanged a scoreless fourth inning, both offenses would start to find a little rhythm.

LETU would take a brief 5-3 lead after the top of the fifth but Howard Payne answered right back with a three-run inning of their own to retake the lead, 6-5.

The Lady Jackets loaded the bases with some smart hitting and then Haley Slater cleared them when she blasted a ball into the left-center field wall. They were forced into a groundout to end the inning but they were not done scoring yet.

LeTourneau scored one more run in the top of the sixth to make it 6-6 and Howard Payne responded by going off for seven runs before thunder forced a weather delay. After the two hour delay, the Lady Jackets scored two more runs to walk off the game and pick up the 15-6 victory in six innings.

Kayla Boucher would again clear the bases, this time with a double to centerfield and Audrey Simpson would follow with a beautiful line drive to the outfield gap to score Boucher.

Bri Davis would work a count and take a walk to help keep Howard Payne in scoring position and Gabrielle Roque's single to right field scored Simpson. After Jazmine Bridges stroked a ball to the centerfield gap to score Davis, Bridges was brought around the bases to score by a fielders choice. The game was then delayed for thunder with two outs and a runner on first base.

Once play resumed, Tonya Thompson drew a walk and put the Lady Jackets back into scoring position. Shawneece Jones would then step up and deliver a beautiful, well-hit ball to left-field to score both runners and collect the first walk-off of her Howard Payne career.

Howard Payne picked up the 15-6 victory after holding LeTourneau to just six hits on the day. The gutsy performances the Lady Jackets received in the circle from Audrey Simpson (four innings) and Tia Campos (two innings) helped seal the victory.

Morgean Schultz scored three runs and drove in one while drawing two walks. Kayla Boucher finished 3-3 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBI while Audrey Simpson finished 2-4 with two RBI, a double and two runs scored. Haley Slater drove in one run on 1-2 hitting in the victory.

Howard Payne will now return to the road, this time to face-off against Hardin-Simmons in Abilene. The first of three games is set to being on Friday, March 23rd at 1:00 PM. If you can make the trip to Abilene, find links to live stats and video at HPUSports.com.
