TYLER, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's basketball team outscored the University of Texas at Tyler 15-3 in overtime to claim an 87-75 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon.
Down ten at the break, Howard Payne battled back from an eight point deficit in the second half to tie the game at 68-68 with 3:20 left in regulation. Stellar defense by the Yellow Jackets forced overtime where the Howard Payne dominated outscoring UT Tyler 15-3 to claim the 87-75 victory.
Howard Payne out rebounded UTT 45-36 and also forced 20 Patriot turnovers in the game. The Jackets defense held the Patriots to just 37.5% shooting from the field and 5 of 26 shooting from behind the arc.
The Jackets were led by
Shadd Cole with a game high 26 points and a career high 16 rebounds. He was 10 of 18 from the field and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line.
Timothy Aguero and
Luke Cox added 13 points each. Aguero also had a game high five assists along with five steals.
UT Tyler was led by Darius Alford with 23 points followed by Chris Crieg with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Howard Payne will return home next to play Sul Ross State University on Saturday, Jan. 12th at 3:00 pm.
