MARSHALL, Texas – The Howard Payne University men's basketball team fell on the road to East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas on Saturday, January 6
th by a final score of 89-72.
After a hard-fought 1
st half between the Tigers and the Yellow Jackets, HPU would head into the break with a 36-32 lead. The bench provided a great spark in the 1
st stanza as they scored 13 points.
Despite starting the 2
nd half with a four-point lead, Howard Payne would be outscored 57-36 in the final 20 minutes, ultimately losing the game 89-72. ETBU took advantage of their size, scoring 52 points in the paint throughout the game.
ETBU outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 47-29 which included 17 offensive rebounds, resulting in 24 second chance points. Howard Payne would win the turnover battle with 14 Tiger turnovers forced.
Armonie Ramey led the way with four steals on the night.
HPU shot 39.7% (23-58) from the field, including seven three-pointers. ETBU finished 50% (36-72) from the field as they knocked down seven treys as well.
Howard Payne was led by a 21-point performance from
Hudson Johnson followed by 14 points from
Luke Whidbee. Rounding out the three double-digit scorers for HPU was
Armonie Ramey who tallied 11 points.
Leading the way for the Tigers was Darry Moore who scored 25 points. Following behind was Michael Roberts with 17 points.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on the road Saturday, January 13
th as they travel to Alpine, Texas to take on Sul Ross State with tip-off set for 3:00 PM.
