SEGUIN, Texas -- Howard Payne University's Hudson Johnson scored a career-high 37 points, but the Yellow Jacket men's basketball team fell to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs 95-79 on the road Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (0-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Johnson, who had 37 points. Armonie Ramey added 14 points and five steals and Trey Jackson added nine points, six rebounds and three steals.
Hudson Johnson's numbers in the game were outstanding, 11 of 18 from the field, 2 of 4 from behind the arc, while shooting 13 of 15 from the free-throw line.
The Howard Payne defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 24 Texas Lutheran turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 31 points on the offensive end of the floor. Ramey's five steals led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 48-34 heading into halftime.
Texas Lutheran kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing an 83-67 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Johnson's layup, to shrink the deficit to 83-73 with 3:59 to go in the contest. Texas Lutheran responded and outscored the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 95-79. Howard Payne took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 45 points in the lane.
