BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University men's basketball team lead 49-41 at the half, but gave up 65 second half points losing the game 106-90 on Saturday at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets came out aggressive as they forced two turnovers in the first 1:18 on the way to a 9-2 run to start the game. HPU continued to stay aggressive and mounted a 10-0 run that allowed Howard Payne to jump out to an 18-point lead with 7:17 remaining in the half. The bench provided a major spark for HPU outscoring LeTourneau 25-8 in the 1
st half. Howard Payne would head into the break leading 49-41.
LeTourneau took control inside in the 2
nd half outrebounding the Yellow Jackets 31-17 including 13 offensive rebounds that resulted in 16 second chance points. LeTourneau took the momentum of the game after an 18-4 run that gave them a one-point lead with 12:25 left in the game. LeTourneau continued to pour it on scoring 65 2
nd half points to complete the 18-point comeback and win 106-90.
Howard Payne was outrebounded 54-41 and lost the second chance battle 23-9. The Yellow Jackets were able to force 15 LeTourneau turnovers that resulted in 14 points for HPU.
The Yellow Jackets finished 45.5% (35-77) from the field while netting five three-pointers as well. LeTourneau shot 45.9% (39-85) from the field and knocked down 13 treys.
Howard Payne was led by two 17-point performances from
Jarod Johnson and
Armonie Ramey.
Willie Everline provided a huge spark off the bench scoring a career-high 14 points. Rounding out the five double-digit scorers for HPU was
Myles Brown with 13 and
Hudson Johnson with 12.
LeTourneau was led by Jackson Mayes who scored a game-high 26 points. Caedmon Liebengood followed behind with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets will look forward to their last game of the season as they host Sul Ross State next Saturday on senior day with tip-off set for 3:00 PM.
