HOBBS, NM - The Howard Payne University softball team went on the road to Hobbs, New Mexico to take on the University of Southwest in a double-header on Saturday. The Lady Jackets lost game one 7-3 and game two 5-1.Â
GAME 1 | Southwest (NM) 7, Howard Payne 3
Makayla Wesley totaled three hits, but the Howard Payne Lady Jackets fell to the Southwest (NM) Mustangs 7-3 Saturday.
Bree Cason (4-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Howard Payne (5-4).
In addition to her three hits, Wesley had two doubles to lead the Lady Jackets. Bryce Allen-Bourland furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Amber Williams also helped out for Howard Payne, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Jackets got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Howard Payne got on the board thanks to Williams' RBI double with two outs.
The Lady Jackets lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 4-1. Allen-Bourland came across to score the lone run of the inning for Howard Payne, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Mustangs.
Southwest (NM) expanded their lead to 7-2 before the Howard Payne offense got going, reducing that lead to 7-3 in the seventh. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.

The Howard Payne Lady Jackets struggled on Saturday, falling to the Southwest (NM) Mustangs by final score of 5-1.
Kayla Camacho (0-1) got the ball to start for Howard Payne (5-5) and took the loss. Sydney West was a bright spot for the Lady Jackets, coming out of the bullpen and throwing four innings, giving up one run on two hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.
Makayla Wesley led the way offensively for the Lady Jackets, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI. Elise Munoz provided a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3.

Trailing 5-0, the Lady Jackets first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Howard Payne got on the board thanks to Wesley's RBI double with two outs. The Lady Jackets were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
