MARSHALL, Texas --Jarod Johnson scored 21 points and Armonie Ramey added 20, but the Howard Payne men's basketball team fell to the East Texas Baptist Tigers 108-101 on the road Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (8-9, 0-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Johnson, who had 21 points and three steals. Ramey added 20 points, six rebounds and four steals and Hudson Johnson chipped in as well with 12 points and two steals.
Led by Jordan McClendon's two offensive rebounds, Howard Payne did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.
Howard Payne forced 29 East Texas Baptist turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Saturday's game. The Yellow Jackets turned those takeaways into 26 points on the other end of the floor. Ramey's four steals led the way for Howard Payne.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 60-44 heading into halftime.
After intermission, Howard Payne kept the Tigers from increasing their lead before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Hudson Johnson's three, to shrink the deficit to 80-73 with 11:06 to go in the contest. The Yellow Jackets were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 108-101. Howard Payne capitalized on 19 East Texas Baptist turnovers in the period, collecting 16 points off those turnovers.
