MARSHALL, Texas --Armonie Ramey secured a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds, but the Howard Payne men's basketball team fell to the La Verne Leopards 93-88 at Ornelas Gymnasium Saturday.
In addition to Ramey's solid showing, the Yellow Jackets (7-7) were led by Riley Fornerette, who had 16 points and two steals, and by Trey Jackson, who chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Led by Ramey's seven offensive rebounds, Howard Payne did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 26 boards that resulted in 20 second chance points.
Howard Payne forced 17 La Verne turnovers. The Yellow Jackets turned those takeaways into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. Ramey's four steals led the way for Howard Payne.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-4, Howard Payne went on a 7-0 run with 12:32 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Jarod Johnson, to narrow its deficit to 16-11. La Verne answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Yellow Jackets down 44-36 entering halftime.
La Verne kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing an 86-73 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Fornerette's layup, to shrink the deficit to 86-82 with 3:21 to go in the contest. La Verne responded and outscored the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 93-88. Howard Payne capitalized on seven La Verne turnovers in the period, collecting 13 points off those turnovers.
