Lady Jackets Light Up the Coliseum in Season Debut Victory

Lady Jackets Shine in Season-Opening Win Over Schreiner

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University women's basketball team tipped off the 2025–26 season with a statement, defeating Schreiner University 69–52 Friday evening inside the Brownwood Coliseum. The Lady Jackets opened the night in front of their home crowd, setting the tone for a successful HPU doubleheader that also saw the men pick up a win later that evening.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Lady Jackets found their rhythm in the second, outscoring Schreiner 21–10 to take control of the game. From there, Howard Payne's balance, effort on the glass, and defensive pressure carried them to a comfortable season-opening victory.

Caitlyn Panuco led the charge with 18 points and 9 rebounds, combining inside strength with efficient shooting from deep (3-for-4 from three). Caitlyn Parsons added 12 points and 7 rebounds, providing key second-chance points and consistent play in the paint. Taylor McAfee chipped in 10 points, while Amaris Ambriz came off the bench to score 9, adding a big spark in the second half.

Howard Payne shot an impressive 45.1% from the floor and held Schreiner to just 32.1%, forcing 18 turnovers that led to 19 points off giveaways. The Lady Jackets also controlled the boards with a 40–33 rebounding edge, creating 14 second-chance points and showing strong effort from start to finish.

HPU's defense held Schreiner to only 27 points after halftime, using active hands and pressure to limit easy looks. The Lady Jackets' depth also stood out, with the bench contributing 21 points in the win.

The victory gives Howard Payne (1–0) its first win of the season and a perfect start to the home slate. The Lady Jackets' performance set the tone for a lively night in Brownwood, as both HPU basketball teams opened the 2025–26 season with wins over Schreiner.
