BROWNWOOD, Texas --The Howard Payne women's basketball team came up short in a 68-53 loss to the LeTourneau Yellow Jackets at home Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (4-19, 0-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Kiana Henning, who had 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Madison Clay added 12 points and Caitlyn Panuco added seven points, six rebounds and two steals.
The Howard Payne offense was very productive from downtown, pouring in nine threes on 25 attempts. Hannah Harmon was the most prolific shooter for the Yellow Jackets, draining three treys in the contest.
Howard Payne forced 19 LeTourneau turnovers. The Yellow Jackets turned those takeaways into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Harmon's three steals led the way for Howard Payne.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 22-14 at the end of the first quarter.
LeTourneau kept adding to that lead, building a 36-20 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Azaylee Santos, to narrow its deficit to 36-26. LeTourneau responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Yellow Jackets trailing 41-27 heading into halftime.
Howard Payne started to cut into the deficit after halftime, bringing it to 53-40 by the end of the third quarter. Howard Payne knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 13 total points.
Howard Payne could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 68-53. Howard Payne took advantage of six LeTourneau turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
