BELTON, TX --The Howard Payne University Lady Jackets fell 3-2 in an eight-inning matchup to the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders Thursday.
GAME 1 | Mary Hardin-Baylor 3, Howard Payne 2
Annie-Klein Allgood (0-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Howard Payne (6-23, 0-9). UMHB's D. Sanchez started the ballgame and went six innings, surrendering one run on five hits.
In the batter's box, the Lady Jackets were led by Mackenzie De La Cruz, who went 1-for-3 on the day with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Jackets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Howard Payne plated a run on a based-loaded walk by Ashley Blaylock.
The Crusaders failed to push any runs across before the Lady Jackets built on their lead in the fourth inning. Howard Payne scored once on an RBI single off the bat of De La Cruz, which brought the Lady Jackets lead to 2-0. The Lady Jackets were unable to hold the lead, as Mary Hardin-Baylor scored three times over the remaining four innings to grab the 3-2 win.

Howard Payne managed three chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Lady Jackets last got a runner on third in the fifth, when Alana Smith made it 60 feet away from scoring with nobody out.
