BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Schreiner University on Thursday evening at Citizens National Bank Field, improving the Lady Jackets' record to 4-1 on the season.
HPU struck first in the 9th minute when Abbie Wetzel found the back of the net off an assist from Kaylin Greger, giving the Lady Jackets an early 1-0 advantage. Despite several more first-half opportunities, the score held through halftime.
Schreiner pulled level in the 60th minute as Haley Withers converted with help from Kailey Ellsworth to make it 1-1.
The decisive moment came in the 72nd minute, when Sydney Tate netted her second goal of the year, finishing a setup from Kendall Watkins to restore the lead for Howard Payne.
Strong defensive play over the final 20 minutes preserved the win.
Howard Payne outshot Schreiner 13-5, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Goalkeepers Landry Combs and Peyton Mueller combined for three saves, with Mueller earning the decision after playing the second half.
Schreiner's goalkeeper Emilie Novasad tallied four saves while facing 13 total shots.
