KERVILLE, Texas- The Howard Payne University women's soccer team (6-6, 2-3)Â has beaten Schreiner University (0-8-2, 0-5) by a score of 0-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Mountaineer Soccer Field. Freshman forward and midfielder
Kenzie Cameron scored the lone goal of the match in the 26th minute.
The Lady Jackets came out of the gates firing. Junior midfielder
Dakota McKee recorded HPU's first shot in the opening minute and forced Schreiner goalkeeper Emilie Novasad into a save.
Schreiner then had an opportunity of their own when the ball bounced around the Lady Jackets penalty box before it was ultimately cleared and shot over HPU's goal a few minutes later. Graduate goalkeeper
Landry Combs was then called into action when the Mountaineers fired a long shot.
Cameron then opened up the scoring for Howard Payne when Novasad parried senior forward
Alayna Lopez's shot towards Cameron, who instinctually made an attacking run and was able to slot the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Cameron's fourth goal of the season.
The Mountaineers had what arguably was their best goal scoring opportunity in the 38
th minute when Combs parried a shot of Aspen Ulibarru into the path of an awaiting Cari Schott. Schott couldn't connect the ball cleanly; however, and it went out behind the goal for a goal kick.
In the second half, HPU made some subs to keep the structure in place. Senior midfielder
Sarah Krusing and sophomore defender
Kamaryn Feil were two of those subs. Krusing came on for McKee and the 60th minute provided instant offense by offering two shots on goal soon after subbing on. Feil came on for senior midfielder
Sydney Tate in the 57th minute.
Tate was a stable presence at the base of the Lady Jackets' midfield by shielding HPU's back three and also provided attacking runs when needed. When Feil came on, freshman
Hailey Swafford moved back from her position into that spot and continued to do the same for the rest of the match.
Combs picked up another win and shutout in the match, her fifth win and second shutout of the season. This expands her lead in Howard Payne's record books after she became the Lady Jackets' all time wins leader and shutouts leader in the 1-0 win over ETBU earlier this season.
