BROWNWOOD, Texas- The Howard Payne University men's soccer team (4-7-2, 1-4-1) has lost to the Schreiner University Mountaineers (5-4-3, 3-1-2) by a score of 1-3 on Saturday evening at the Citizens National Bank Soccer Field. It was Senior Night for the men's soccer team, and graduate defender
Cameron Phipps and senior midfielder
Xzavier Saldana were honored at halftime of the women's soccer match.
The Yellow Jackets fell behind early when Cameron Hoschar scored the first goal of the match in the first five minutes. By the twentieth minute, sophomore goalkeeper
Adrian Villa had to be relied upon to make four big saves to keep the Howard Payne in the game.
Even though HPU put up five shots during this time, three of which came courtesy of Saldana, the Yellow Jackets still made a quadruple change in the 27th minute to try to stem the tide and get back into the game.
These changes didn't work, as Schreiner scored their second goal of the match shortly thereafter. Right after halftime, the Mountaineers found their third goal of the match.
Howard Payne found some offensive momentum late in the game. Freshman forward
Connor Parker pulled one back with his fourth goal of the season. Sophomore forward
Andrew Womack almost got the Yellow Jackets within one, but his attempt narrowly missed and hit the top of the net.
In total, HPU had 12 shots and eight on goal, while Schreiner had 18 shots and twelve on goal. Villa made nine saves in the contest.
Up Next: The Howard Payne University men's soccer team will continue it's final homestand of the season when the team hosts Hardin-Simmons University at the Citizens National Bank Soccer Field on Thursday, October, 22, at 7:30 PM.
