MARSHALL, Texas- The Howard Payne University women's soccer team (6-9-1, 2-6-1) and the East Texas Baptist University Tigers (5-9-2, 1-6-2) played to a scoreless draw on Thursday afternoon at the Cornish Soccer Field in Marshall, Texas. The result doesn't answer any questions for the Lady Jackets, as they will find out on Saturday where they will be playing in the first round of the ASC Conference Tournmanent.
It was a defensive battle between the two teams. In the first 20 minutes of the game, East Texas Baptist had the majority of the possession and kept trying to play through its right flank. Howard Payne was able to stand strong however; as freshman defender Kelsey Gilmore was able lock down ETBU's right winger, Hannah Warren.
After senior midfielder Sarah Krusing, freshman midfielder and forward Kenzie Cameron and junior midfielder Dakota McKee subbed into the match in the 25th minute, the Lady Jackets gained the momentum in the match. Cameron contributed three shots and Krusing added another shot in the last 20 minutes of the half.
The Lady Jackets kept their momentum rolling over halftime and looked like they would find the opening goal. However, Howard Payne didn't have the best opportunities in the match to score.
The woodwork was kind to HPU, as ETBU forward Grace Shurley hit the crossbar and hit the post on two efforts in the second half. Those two efforts flipped the switch again, and Howard Payne controlled the rest of the match.
In total, Howard Payne played and industrious style of play and was able to put up nine shots and six shots on target, compared to East Texas Baptist who had 14 shots and three on target. Graduate goalkeeper Landry Combs made three saves, but otherwise, didn't have much to do over the course of the 90 minutes
Up Next: The Howard Payne women's soccer team will play its final regular season match when the Lady Jackets travel to Belton, Texas to play the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders on Saturday, October 31 at 5:00 PM.
