KERRVILLE, Texas – The Howard Payne University men's soccer team's season is over after a 2-1 crushing defeat to the Schreiner University Mountaineers on at the Mountaineer Soccer Field on Tuesday evening.
HPU tested out Schreiner goalkeeper Mason Miller early through shots from graduate defender Cameron Phipps, sophomore midfielder Francisco Perez and senior midfielder Xzavier Saldana, but ultimately, the Yellow Jackets couldn't find the back of the net, as Miller proved why he is worthy of an ASC All-Conference selection.
Schreiner went toe-to-toe with Howard Payne on shots. However, all of Schreiner's opportunities were off target, which meant sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Villa didn't have to do much work after tying the HPU program record for most saves in one match with 18.
At halftime, the score remained the same at 0-0. The Yellow Jackets had the slight advantage in shots, 6-5, and forced Miller into the three aforementioned saves.
In the second half, an unfortunate own goal gave Schreiner the lead in the 69th minute. The Mountaineers lead wouldn't last a long time though, as freshman forward Connor Parker and sophomore forward Andrew Womack connected to allow Parker to score the equalizing goal for Howard Payne in the 74th minute. Schreiner then ultimately scored the game-winning goal right near the end of the regulation in the 89th minute to seal out the win.
In total, HPU had nine shots and four on target, while Schreiner had 11 shots and two on target. Villa made one save in the match.
