Opening day brought a mix of fireworks and learning experiences for the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets softball team as they opened the 2026 campaign with a doubleheader at Schreiner University. The Jackets walked away with a split, winning the first game and gathering plenty of momentum for the rest of the season.
In the first game, Howard Payne's bats were dialed in from the start, racking up 9 runs in the first 4 innings and racing to a strong offensive performance totaling 13 runs on the day. The lineup put together timely hits and took advantage of opportunities to bring runners home, totaling 16 hits setting the tone for the season. HPUs pitching was just as impressive as Alyssa Silva and Ava Aviles only gave up a combined 8 hits on the day. This game also marked the first victory for Coach B at the helm of the Yellow Jackets, a special milestone for her and the program with this being the first of many to come in the Navy and Gold.Â
The second game proved a tougher battle as Schreiner mounted offense and took control. Even in a challenging loss, Howard Payne had bright spots to build on. The team continued to show grit at the plate and defensively only allowed 9 total hits in the second outing. Pitchers battled through traffic, and the defense made key plays to keep the game competitive.
Collectively, the day showcased Howard Payne's offensive depth and competitive spirit. The win in the opener and the lessons from the nightcap give the Yellow Jackets plenty to be proud of as they head into the rest of the 2026 season.
Looking ahead, the Yellow Jackets will carry this split and opening game win forward as they look to bounce back at home on Friday, February 6th for a double header against Central Christian College of Kansas.Â
