Howard Payne Edged in Tight 4-3 Battle with McMurry

Yellow Jackets Fall in Nail-Biter to McMurry, 4-3

Howard Payne men's tennis battled in a closely contested matchup but ultimately fell 4-3 to McMurry on March 21 in a match that came down to the wire.

Doubles play proved pivotal early, with McMurry narrowly claiming the point. Parker Hoel and Riley Harker were edged 7-6 at the No. 2 position in a tightly fought set, while Ben Mabry and Eli Hall secured a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. The difference came at the top spot, where Howard Payne dropped the No. 1 match 6-3, giving McMurry the early advantage.

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets responded with strong performances across the lineup. Gabriel Keeney-McCollough led the way at No. 1 singles with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory. Parker Hoel added another dominant point at No. 5, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Eli Hall delivered a hard-fought win at No. 4 to keep Howard Payne within striking distance.

Despite the momentum, McMurry secured wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 singles to clinch the narrow 4-3 team victory.

The Jackets will return to action on Friday, April 3rd at home in Brownwood against East Texas Baptist University to open conference play.
